June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month. Pride month is currently celebrated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising, a series of events between police and LGBTQ+ protesters that stretched over six days was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. It was officially recognized by the U.S. government when President Bill Clinton declared June 1999 “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month,” then President Barack Obama proclaimed June to be “LGBT Pride Month,” and President Joe Biden further expanded the observance to “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month. Today, celebrations include parades, rallies, picnics, parties, workshops, concerts, and countless more events that attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are also held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals have had on history at local, national, and international level.
